Northwest Airlines Perspectives on Climate Change

Below please find my responses...sorry for the late submission.

Climate change will likely have a significant impact on future generations. Technological advancement will definitely allow more efficient use of energy. Utilization of future technology combined with smarter use of currently available technology are important steps for China's sustainable development.

Northwest is committed to conserving resources and protecting the environment. NWA has a comprehensive environmental mission statement that outlines its goals, guidelines and objectives for all its employees to minimize our environmental impact wherever permissible and economically and technically feasible. In China, NWA was the first international airline to go to paperless ticketing and shared our technology with China's travelsky. As an active member of US-China Aviation Co-operation Program, we are sharing our expertise with China civil aviation experts on Air Traffic Management and other processes that can assist to manage the crowded skies and airports. We have also initiated thru Airport Operating Committees in Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou airports to use Electric Gate Power to service planes when on ground in China. Initiatives are in place to minimise the fuel burn that helps to protect the environment as well as reduce costs.

In the aviation field Chinese authorities need to look at various areas to protect the environment, from efficient utilisation of the airspace to creating shorter air-routes to more efficiently managing the ground operations so that aircraft idling is minimized on the taxiways. Public Private Government partnerships such as US-China Aviation program are such initiatives that can possibly be included with specific focus on Climate protection.

Addressing climate change is a long undertaking that will take years of collaborative efforts among governments, businesses and citizens. All of society will need to make informed choices to conserve energy and reduce our environmental impacts.

Protecting the environment is a responsibility that we all equally share for our future generations and that we must work together without any political or bureaucratic boundaries. Sharing of technology that helps to protect environment from global companies and developed countries should be given priority.
